In the last thirty years, the Australian wine industry has experienced an unprecedented evolution, becoming one of the main production and oenological reference points on a global scale. THEAustralia today ranks fifth in the global ranking of wine producers, thanks to a vineyard area of 146.244 hectares (according to 2021 data). The country has 2.100 wineries and around 6.000 winemakers, mainly concentrated in South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria, and are responsible for over 45 billion Australian dollars in turnover.
Again based on 2021 numbers, the wine grape harvest exceeded 2 million tonnes, favoring a 34% increase in the production of the Australian wine industry between 2020 and 2021, which rose to around 1,5 billion of litres.
For red wine, which covers 58% of production, there was an increase of 40% compared to the previous two years. For the white one, however, a growth of 27% was achieved, reaching 628 million liters.
The contribution of glass
The increase described was favored by ahighly versatile and proactive container glass industry, led by two industry giants: Visy and Orora. The two companies together manage the production of over one million tonnes of glass for packaging, providing the Australian wine industry with qualitative and incentive support.
Innovation and ambition are the two cornerstones of the Australian glass sector. The factories, which are concentrated in South Australia, not only ensure large production, but also great elegance.
