La Nazaré Green Hydrogen Valley (NGHV) represents the starting point for the decarbonisation of Portugal. It is a consortium of companies that aims to produce low-emission goods, through the electrification of processes and the use of green hydrogen.
On February 22, 2022, the three main glass producers in Portugal (BA Glass, Crisal and Vidrala) joined the NGHV consortium, together with the two largest cement producers (Cimpor and Secil).
Towards carbon neutrality
The five companies produce over one million tons of CO2 emissions per year, Equal to 2,5% of the total carbon dioxide emissions of Portugal et al 10% than those of the Lusitanian industrial sector.
This decarbonization operation therefore represents an important step for the country, which, in line with European objectives, aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The plant: power and timing
Green hydrogen, produced using electricity from renewable sources such as solar, is a key energy source for reducing industrial sector pollution.
In this context, NGHV aims to develop a green hydrogen plant with a initial capacity of 40 MW. Over time it should increase to 600 MW.
The facility will be located in the center of Portugal, a region that hosts the factories of the aforementioned companies. The consortium expects to begin installation of the plant by 2023. Instead, it will have to wait until the end of 2025 for commissioning.
Additional benefits
NGHV will invest approx 100 million euro for the modernization of existing industrial processes. Furthermore, excess hydrogen can be injected into the network of GGND, a natural gas distribution company, to power other industries.
