The year 2020 was a challenging and very difficult year, especially for the Italian industry, and also for the glass industry.
Let us remember that our country is the 2nd glass producer in Europe, it produces over 5 million tons per year.
In 2020 there is a very positive and socially very important data we have recycled better and more: + 5% for glass.
Assovetro took care of spreading these data, during the annual Assembly recently held in Puglia in the suggestive setting of Polignano a Mare.
During the meeting there was much and in-depth talk about how to learn and continue to be green to consciously face the current emergency, which is at the same time working, social and climatic.
Assovetro also addressed the issue of environmental sustainability, which involves the glass industry, and the recycling chain.
The glass industry is one of the major Made in Italy excellences: second in Europe with a turnover of 6 billion and with almost 30 thousand employees throughout the country.
In addition, Italy also boasts a good 79% of recycled glass containers.
In 20 years he has doubled the number of recycled packaging, coming from the most modest 30% recorded in 1998.
And with these numbers Assovetro presented its plan towards decarbonization. The project was drawn up, step by step, by Assovetro and other associations and so-called energy intensive sectors (i.e. energy-intensive, or energy-intensive: sectors that require high consumption in terms of gas, electricity and labor). The investment plan, estimated at around 15 billion euros, promises carbon neutrality of production precisely by 2030.
