OCMI-OTG S.p.a. last developments for stemware sealing machines

OCMI-OTG S.p.a. is nowadays considered as one of the most appreciated suppliers of technology for glass stemware production. The best glass drinkware factories in Europe, where traditionally quality of design and finshing are the first goal, are using OCMI-OTG S.p.a. sealing and stretching machine in their stemware processing lines.
Despite of the deppe crisis of HORECA sector worldwide due to the Covid-19 pandemic, OCMI-OTG S.p.a. could supply sealing/stretching machines for high speed to two of the main glass factories in Europe and the perpective is to see an important recovery of this market segment in the second half of 2021 with the progressive resolution of the sanitary emergency.

Il OCMI machine type SA machine type SA, 42, 48, 60 or, upon customer’s request, 108 stations, allows to produce drinking stemware articles by joining stem and bowl (previously produced in pressing and blowing machines) and, if necessary, by stretching the stem before unloading.
Stemware processing in OCMI-OTG S.p.a. machine is one of the operations where glass forming become a sort of science and where machine manufacturer must be as much flexible as possible in order to satisfy the technical requirement of end-users.
OCMI SA is a rotative machine divided in different working areas. The loading area consists of two loading devices for stems and bowls with 12 arms each. These loaders must be perfectly synchronized with the conveyors coming from the previous machines in order to avoid losses and breakages and, of course, with the rotation of sealing machine itself.
Bowl loader is equipped with 12 mechanical grippers designed according with the bowl shape while grippers of stem loaders can work by vacuum if the stem consists of a simple disk without foot.
The design of stem and bowl to be processed in OCMI-OTG S.p.a. sealing machine is decided in accordance with the shape of the finished article, thanks to the experience of glass specialists.
The bowls are loaded in the lower chucks of the machine while the stems go to the upper chucks.
The lower chucks can be developed with some adaptations in order to correct any defect in stemware axiality: floating chucks with movable supporting plate serve this purpose.
Furthermore the lower chucks can be developed for internal or external gripping of the bowl in accordance with the regularity of moil shape.
For bowls without moil, if moil cut is made before sealing, lower chucks can be equipped with vacuum gripping in order to avoid any contact of mechanical grippers with bowl edge and consequent marks, breakages or cracks.
The upper chucks could be automatically adjusted in height through a camera control system checking the level of the items into the machine: this is very important in order to get the same sealing point in each station and get a uniform quality for all the batch.
The camera control system installed immediately after loading area, allows to get statistics of the production organized by batch or working shift and to save the specifications of each article to be processed in order to recall a project without any delay.
The first working area of the machine is equipped with heating burners since the items must be kept at the right temperature before following operations.
The main cam of the machine allow the vertical movement of lower chucks up to the sealing point for joining with stem. In this point the glass is processed through specific burners dedicated to the sealing operation.
After sealing, if needed, stem can be stretched thanks to lower chucks lowering: the configuration of the cam can be designed to get a quicker or slower stretching or a longer or shorter sealing area.
Even for stretching dedicated burners treat the glass in accordance with this particular operation.
All burners follow with perfect synchronization the movement of articles inside their action range and the nozzles are internally designed and developed by OCMI-OTG S.p.a. in accordance with the different operation to be made on glass.
At the end of the process an unloading device, also equipped with 12 arms with mechanical gripping hands, picks the finished articles and place them on the exit conveyor going to the moil cutting machine or to the lehr.
The configuration of the cam affects the forming and attitude of the glass together with the type of burners used, their position and the temperature of their flames.
The sealing machine by OCMI-OTG S.p.a. allows to produce stemware articles with max. height of 350 mm with max. output of abpout 100 pieces per hour in the most performing model SAL108.
The speed depends on the type of article processed.
Glass coming from blow-blow machines for higher quality items, will require a slower rotation of the working station in OCMI-OTG S.p.a. sealing machine. As usual higher quality products can’t be produced at the highest speed possible.
The most performing OCMI-OTG S.p.a., machine, with 108 stations, allows to get the most complete all-in-one solution since, after stretching area, more space is available to perform other operations line stem flattening or moil crack-off.
All SA sealing and stretching machines are suitable to work in off-line mode, with items coming from heating tunnels, or in line with pressing and press-blow or blow-blow machines.
