Was introduced to Milano the winning project for the European Library of Information and Culture (BEIC extension), a structure of innovative conception, chosen as new functional center of the entire library system of the metropolitan area.
The project, signed by an Italian team, will be developed over an area of 30.000 square meters and will feature the glass.
A beacon for the neighborhood and the city
The European Library of Information and Culture will be born on the grounds of the former Porta Vittoria station (between via Molise, via Monte Ortigara and via Cervignano). The works will start in 2024 and finish in 2026, for a total cost of 101,5 million, financed thanks to funds from the PNRR.
The building will help to give vitality to the neighborhood, while developing a profound opening , symbolized by the transparency of glass, towards the city and the different realities that animate it.
Structure
The project of the European Library of Information and Culture presents a compact and simple envelope, with a strong architectural impact, capable of guaranteeing thermal and acoustic insulation and high energy efficiency.
The building, which recalls the structure of industries, greenhouses and stations, is made up of two towers in glass and steel, 33 meters high and joined on the ground floor, but independent in the five upper floors. At the top, two parallel aisles with a trapezoidal section will house a greenhouse and a large terrace.
The continuity between outside and inside
To access the BEIC you will walk through a green corridor and a large tree-lined square, which will anticipate the entrance to the rectangular room, 8 meters high and divided into several pavilions, with exhibition and commercial spaces, a cafeteria and the return stations of the volumes. From here the real library will open instead for consultation, reading and study.
A cultural treasure
Furthermore, a third pavilion, connected to the central building, will contain theImaginarium, the section dedicated to children and designed to host educational games and experiments, as well as a auditorium with 300 seats.
But the true heritage of the European Library, like the most classic of vaults, will be found underground: a immense deposit robotic of 2,5 million books, protected from natural light and sealed to ensure fire protection and minimize dust penetration.
A European Library for Milan and Italy
As for the materials, the interior will be characterized by wood, while for the exterior the combination of glass and steel it will give life, once again, to a solid building, but in continuity with the external environment, nature and identity of the Milanese metropolis.
And thanks to the BEIC, the lack of a public library suitable for the needs of the 7st century will be filled, that is, capable of satisfying the information and cultural needs of a metropolitan area of over XNUMX million citizens, in connection with the prestigious local university.
