The attention towards sustainability and respect for the environment is growing
In Italy and in Europe, glass continues to be the preferred material by consumers for food and beverage containers: according to an independent research conducted by InSites on over 10.000 consumers in 13 European countries and commissioned by Friends of Glass and Feve, the European Federation of glass containers, 9 out of 10 consumers recommend it (over 91%).
Furthermore, half of consumers now buy more products packaged in glass than they did 3 years ago.
The survey also examines the reasons why Italians choose glass: for yours recyclability (42%), for food safety (34%), for the lower environmental impact (31%).
Most consumers (3 out of 4) say they are very worried about waste from food containers and 1 in 3 interviewed cites it as the most important consideration when making a purchase decision. At the same time, 46% of Europeans say they have significantly reduced their consumption of plastic to prevent waste in the environment.
The research also shows that the majority of consumers recycle their glass packaging (84% of Europeans collect glass separately for recycling) with a record in Italy with 90% of consumers. Italians are also very well informed about having to dispose of corks and lids separately, especially plastic and cork ones for 85% (the European average is below 80%).
1 in 3 consumers both in Italy and at European level would appreciate closer collection bells and clearer instructions on glass recycling: in Italy this need is felt by 98% of the interviewees.
I numbers are encouraging with a view to achieving important sustainability goals in Europe, such as a real glass recycling rate of 70% by 2025 and 75% by 2030 for each country.
