Earth Day: the celebrations in the International Year of Glass

April 22, 2022 is the celebration of the World Earth Day. Over the past 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated by millions of people around the world, with cross-cutting events and events involving up to 192 nations.
These celebrations are joined by the entire glass supply chain, the sector devoted to the enhancement of ecological, sustainable and recyclable material par excellence.

    What is Earth Day?

But let's start from the origins. Established for the first time in 1970, Earth Day was born in the United States from the ideas of the Democratic senator Gay Lord Nelson: "All people, regardless of ethnicity, sex, income or geographical origin, they have the right to a healthy, balanced and sustainable environment".

Since then, also thanks to the Internet, the movement has become global, mobilizing millions of people around the world every year and pushing more than 5.000 environmental associations to organize events to inform and raise awareness among citizens, but not only. In recent years, the industries that practiceeco-friendly they have multiplied, and this day represents an important opportunity to push others on the same path.

When do we talk about "sustainable industry"?

Sustainable industry is a concept that integrates a business model with the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. In particular, environmental sustainability involves a series of precautions aimed at protecting our ecosystem and considerably reducing the impact of processes and products.

Sustainability is a rapidly expanding sector in Italy as well. The techniques used can range from technologies and processes for the reuse and recycling of products, components and materials, to systems and methods for the measurement and implementation of "Sustainable supply chains", up to the use of Life Cycle Engineering, a methodology that evaluates the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle, from its production to its disposal.

    Why focus on glass?

Choosing and investing in glass means celebrating Earth Day every day. Glass is in fact a highly ecological and completely recyclable material, a real circular economy symbol
It is therefore a crucial element for our society, called to respond to a complex and highly challenging reality such as the current one. In fact, glass presents itself as the solution for sustainability in many sectors, frombuilding to packaging, up to medicine, Via information and communications.

    International Year of Glass

It is no coincidence that the United Nations General Assembly declared the 2022 International Year of Glass. This resolution indicates that glass has all the potential to contribute to the implementation of sustainable production and consumption models. It therefore fully recognizes its favorable environmental footprint.

In a nutshell, glass presents itself today as the most advanced frontier of innovation and social cultures. In fact, this material is able to better interpret our time, proposing itself as the protagonist of the behaviors for which sustainability is the criterion of choice.
The Earth Day of 2022 will therefore enjoy the charm and timeless potential of glass, in a unique occasion of celebration.
