The Italian glass industry is the protagonist of the first guidelines for the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectorsPublished by Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), the document outlines strategies to limit emissions and promote the competitiveness of the supply chain.
The GSE is therefore preparing to support glass companies in their journey circularity, providing practical tools to invest in renewable energy, boost self-consumption, and benefit from national incentives.
A shared path towards sustainable glass
These documents are the result of careful analysis conducted at industrial plants and direct discussions between the GSE and industry associations. Glass companies will thus be able to access technological solutions and financial tools useful for planning effective and sustainable interventions.
The key strategies
The glass industry is among the most complex to decarbonize, due to the energy intensity of its production processes, which can account for up to 30% of overall costs.
Among the most relevant proposals of the GSE guidelines are:
- il glass cullet recycling, which allows for a significant reduction in the need for raw materials and energy consumption, with estimated savings of up to 25%;
- the integration of alternative fuels, such as biomethane and green hydrogen;
- the creation of energy communities for more efficient management and green of consumption;
- the adoption of electric hybrid ovens;
- the use of process heat recovery systems.
There is also no shortage of operational tools for energy diagnosis, technology sheets, economic simulators, and useful information for accessing incentives dedicated to decarbonization.
A systemic vision
The project will be gradually extended to other industrial sectors, with the aim of building a structured and comprehensive vision to support the national production system's energy transition towards a low-carbon industry that is competitive on the global scene.
