The pride of Montessori schools is the harmonious development of children.
There are simple rules that perhaps we underestimate but fundamental for the growth of the little ones.
The tables and furniture are designed to be light: this favors the participation of children in positioning and moving them, making them independent and responsible.
With the same educational goal, Montessori school children use ceramic plates and glass glasses.
This choice invites them to move in a careful, prudent and respectful way, with coordinated, intentional, polite actions. In this way the child pays close attention to his movement in space and in relation to others.
A plastic, unbreakable and sensorially unattractive material would accustom the child to taking little care of objects; to treat them without due respect and not to take responsibility for their actions.
On the other hand, if the child is taught to use breakable material, such as glass glasses or ceramic plates, we help him to:
- concentrate on his gestures and movements: he knows that, if the object were to fall, it could break
- face and manage risk and therefore learn prudence
- naturally develop respect for objects, care, responsibility
- make more intentional and conscious movements, manage your body better, refining fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
- better manage emotions such as frustration and sorrow due for example to the breaking of an object
- understand that actions have consequences and that it is important to pay attention to what you are doing, with care and concentration.
The teachings of Maria Montessori insist very clearly on the need to provide the child with beautiful, interesting, sensory objects: and glass is a great opportunity.
