Blown glass revives in the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno

In the suggestive scenery of theAbbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, the first intensive workshop dedicated to the ancient art of blown glass.
The project, wanted by the Epyphanius Cultural Association, represents the first step towards the rebirth of a permanent glass-making activity that recovers medieval techniques through a modern and sustainable perspective.

The rich tradition of Volturno glass

More than a thousand years ago, the Molise valley and the Abbey hosted a very prestigious artisan production center: Benedictine monks were known for their skill in processing of blown glass, as evidenced by the numerous finds that emerged from archaeological excavations (jewels, stained glass windows, ampoules and lanterns, but also work tools and furnaces).

A project between past and future

The glass blowing course, led by the glass master of the Roman laboratory “Vetromaghie”, aims revitalize local craftsmanship, giving new life to the economy of the territory, thanks also to the involvement, free of charge, of ten residents of the Volturno Valley. The project aims to create a widespread network of artisan workshops, encouraging new job opportunities and promoting quality tourism.

    The focus on sustainability

The laboratory has encouraged the use of recycled materials, representing a perfect example of how glass art can combine tradition and modernity, with particular attention toThe circular economy and the environmental impact of each production.
The first blown glass products will be produced by mid-October and will be symbolically donated to the Monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno, inaugurating a new season for local craftsmanship.

The conclusion of this first cycle of activities marks the beginning of a larger project to relaunch the artisan traditions linked to the processing of blown glass, but not only that. With the support of the Municipality of Rocchetta a Volturno and other local entities, the glass laboratory is proposed as a model of cultural and economic development for the entire region.
