The United Nations General Assembly has decided to dedicate 2022 to the celebration of glass.
2022 will underline the technological, scientific, economic, environmental, historical and artistic role of glass in our society. Being sustainable, reusable and recyclable glass has great potential for development in new technologies and will be a fundamental element to face the challenges of sustainable development and inclusive societies, achieve global economic recovery.
The International Year of Glass will officially kick off in February in Geneva. Where a special event is scheduled on 10 and 11 at the Palace of Nations in Geneva with the participation of 30 world-class speakers.
The news was greeted with great enthusiasm by Assovetro, the national association of glass industrialists belonging to Confindustria, which this year also celebrates the 75th anniversary of its foundation.

The sustainability of glass, which can be reused and recycled indefinitely, is demonstrated by the data presented in the report Co.Re.Ve in 2020, the year of the pandemic, glass recycling in Italy reached 79% (it was 77% the previous year), well above the European target of 75% set for 2030. The commitment of industry is to reach 90% by acting on collection, treatment and recycling.
To celebrate the International Year of Glass, Assovetro is planning a series of initiatives throughout the year. Demonstrations and events are planned in various Italian cities: from Genoa to Trento, from Parma to Bologna to Venice.
Together with glass, in 2022, fishing and aquaculture are also celebrated, the basic sciences for sustainable development and the sustainable development of the mountains, as reported by OnuItalia, the Italian newspaper of the United Nations.
